Printing Tools
OK kids you are now stepping into my little world. My MTV mug I bought for a dollar before they went outta business this past month, holds the coffee very nice. I ink ontop of a piece of plexiglass also used when I make monotpes. Usually I have a some kind of system to register the plate in this case a tree stump. On the paper you will notice two notches and then I outlined the stump to make sure I printed 75 consistent prints. That little round wooden thing was my friend Tessa's, it is a cabinet knob. I rub mostly all of the prints I made within the last year with this little knob. My broken down old phone that I don't want to get a new because I would have to relearn how to use the silly thing. To make things less toxic I clean up with regular cooking oil like corn oil.
I share all of this with you because the entire production takes about two feet of a table top. One foot for the inking and the other for the clean paper and printing. The more I make art the more I learn if there is a will there is a way, I love printing, but do not love heading to a printmaking studio to make the work. So this is a great solution that takes so little space. Oh you don't have to line all your prints on the floor either I just did that because I like to see things in a series. But I could have let them dry between sheets of newsprint.
Spinning Top
This Christmas my friend and I visited a tree farm. It was the first time I ever picked a tree that was not from the street or home depot. I know I killed a tree for Christmas, but sometimes I just get all swept up in things and enjoyed walking on the snow, drinking hot cider and eating a toasted marshmallow. So once the tree was chosen the farmer cut off about 2 inches from the bottom and I had a small stump. I looked at it for a couple of days and wanted to print it, but into what?
I finally took a proof of the wood stump and looked at it for a few more days, coffee is oh so helpful to this process. . . sip and look, sip and look. At first it only looked like saturn to me with a ring around the planet, but I turned it and saw a top so I ran with it.
I added colored pencil for the table top and the string and had a spinning top. It was given to friends and family this holiday season. All the best in 2010!
Spinning Top

Black and Bling Skull
Black and Bling Skull, Solorplate, 3"x3"
The print started on frosted glass and I drew in pencil on the surface. I then placed the glass ontop of the solor plate and exposed the image to the sun. It is a technique that is closer to lithograph, but is actually a solorplate.
Once the plate was burned then I was free to do all sorts of things. The black in intaglio then I hand painted the yellow directly on the plate.
This is an edition of 10 I have 5 prints then I gave Tats Cru www.tatscru.com
I had a bad morning one day and somehow I ended up sitting on a curb watching Tats cru work their magic and it changed my headspace. After seeing those guys work I eventually got hungry to make my own work. It snapped me out of what could have been a crappy morning into a very productive day. So I wanted to thank them for not bothering me while I watched them work. One never knows where or when inspiration will appear and they were just what I needed that day.
